I love this story and these illustrations are achingly beautiful. I read this as a child in a collection of Wilde's fairy tales that my grandmother had. All of his endings were sad, unlike the more popular versions. This story in particular I remember because it introduced me to a mystical concept as a child: that the child the Selfish Giant loved was the Christ child. This story still has the power to make me cry at the end, and I am in my fifties now.
