In my opinion, the best Sullivan's Crossing novel is 'The Family Gathering'. Robyn Carr's lastest installment, 'The Country Guesthouse', was . . . OK. It suffers from being slow and far too repetitive, which I have found seems to be an unpleasant trait of Carr's books lately. 'The Country Guesthouse' is a good, interesting story line that could have been so, so much better. I reads and feels like whomever wrote the first half of the book was not the same person who wrote the more interesting second half. The dialogue in the early part of the book is horrendous. It's stilted and dry. It's like mentally hearing to a bored, monotone person reading a badly written script. But again, it gets more somewhat more authentic, more alive in the second half of the book. I think Noah is quite a cute kid and I think he rescues the book. However, there are times he sounds more like a pretentious high school sophomore than a 5 year old little boy: "You can sit down on the bed to get into your pajamas. I can help you if you want me too." "I can do this," he said. "but I'll take a ride. Romeo and Owen just about wrecked me today!" "Are you too tired to read for a while?" she asked. He yawned. "Maybe But I have a little listening left." Just, no. A too polite conversation with a 5 year old and too adultish response from the 5 year old. "Need some help with those pj's? Nope, I got it.", sounds more realistic and definitely more like all six boys in my family at that age. Don't get me started on the "just about wrecked me" . . . Good grief. A disappointed 2.5 Stars
