So what does it mean to be human? Does it mean blood and breath? Does it mean a pumping heart? Does it mean hair that grows? Does it mean the ability to love, to cry, to feel pain? In sawyers novel he pushes the limits between intelligence and humanity, and what it is to be truly alive. In Mindscan science has discovered the technology that permits the transfer of the essence of a person and all that which is that person to a vessel nested in a, for want of a better term, robot. In essence, this bestows a kind of immortality upon the person scanned. Both the original and the copy continue to exist until one or the other change their mind. And that is exactly what happens in the novel. The novel is provocative and poignant. It raises some significant questions about who we are and who we think wa are. And most importantly, the novel recounts a compelling tale.
