a surreal collection of futurist short stories chronicling the horrors that the near future could bring thanks to the absurdities of corporate, consumer and commodity culture. These stories stand, not only as a warning of the Post-Modern hell we have created, but also the dehumanizing and enslaving effect of the technology we put up with that forever promises to make our lives better. These stories read like a Terry Gilliam film or episodes of Black Mirror. George Saunders seems to be channeling a bit of Kurt Vonnegut and Philip K. Dick but with a power and command of the language that is uniquely his own. What makes these short stories truly chilling is that these absurdities of existence seem somehow possible in the near future.
