Here’s a breakdown of Kissing in America: Eva’s mother is a professor, huge feminist, and over protective. Eva is obsessed with romance novels – the smutty, embarrassing to read on the bus kind. Her father died two years ago and she lies to everyone about how he died – she says it was a heart attack and not a plane crash. Her best friend is Annie and she is under a lot of pressure to make her parents proud since all her two older sisters will ever amount to is sales associates at American Eagle. Eva has always had a crush on Will. Eva starts tutoring Will and as they learn about each other and open up in ways they never have with anyone else, Eva’s love and their friendship grows. When Will suddenly moves across the country to California, Eva is determined to find a way to see him. When she discovers that The Smartest Girls in America is casting for a new reality game show that is shooting in California, she convinces Annie to enter and our story begins. Eva and Annie embark on a bus trip where they’ll stay with the most bizarre family and friends along the way. They’ll learn about love, friendship, and of course, what an STD looks like when it gets in your eye thanks to Eva’s crazy aunt. Kissing in America is going to be one of the hottest reads this summer, it really has everything you want in a summer read. I loved that Eva felt like a complete person with her undying love of romance novels and her mourning over the loss of her father. During this really short time in her life, she learns a lot about herself, her family, and her friends. She'll learn that sometimes her mother and aunt are right, and sometimes they can be wrong.
