This is essentially a form of ghost story for little children that teaches acceptance of others through common experience. It avoids potentially prejudicial stereotypes and cleverly distracts from situations that might be legitimately scary for children by making the object of fear something as mundane and neutral as an empty pair of pants. I bought a vinyl recording of this from the Scholastic Book Club in grade 4 and this has been my favourite Seuss story ever since.

This book was great! I'm a pretty big Seuss fan, but have never read this one. There have been a few books of his that have disappointed me, but this was not one of them. It was highly entertaining and fun to read. As per usual, with most Seuss, it has a really nice flow and the story is humerous. It also has a very nice message and can start a conversation with your child about different kinds of fears. I would suggest this book for reading levels 3 and up. As you would want to talk about it with the child. They need some form of higher understanding, or else it might seem more scary than fun.
