I think this is the equivalent of interpretive modern dance but on film. You can't take a literal interpretation of this movie. I think it is meant to be symbolic. Taking this movie literally is just interpreting it as one mess of a movie. I like all the actors in this movie but I think that it's extreme graphic symbolism was a little too ghoulish for some viewers. Be warned, do not watch with your kids!

Three-and-a-half stars for sheer writing and movie-making audacity!

Looking for realism? Look elsewhere. But if you're interested in a visually arresting take on the familiar theme of a wife/mother's submission to her husband's vaunted passion and acclaim, don't miss this!

Outlandish...outrageous...hilarious and unforgettable. Great--and very demanding--performance by Jennifer Lawrence in front the camera, and inspired creative work from Aronofsky behind the camera--truly one of today's most intriguing movie-makers.

Those who would prefer a more "literal" or realistic treatment of the theme, see Glenn Close in her seventh (!) Oscar nominated role as..."The Wife."

Those who like their movies over-the-top, see this one--and Aronofsky's earlier movie, Requiem For a Dream.

I was so into the deeper meaning of this movie. It was chaotic and left me reading more into each aspect.

Pretty depressing, but worth a watch.

It wasn't what I expected, a waste of time in my opinion.

It is so horrible and depressing. Devil worship. Choose something more uplifting. Throw this into trash. I will reconsider watching any further films with these actors and this director.

If you had to pick between pulling out your toenails and watching this movie, maybe watch this movie. but the experiences are eerily similar..
Drawn out in all the wrong ways, a good message is completely skewed by heavy handed themes that echo xenophobic and cliche tropes.
Could've been great, but not even the acting helped, J-law was trying so hard to not be J-law its confusing as to why she was even cast.

This film, from the always unpleasant Darren Aronofosky ("Black Swan," "The Wrestler") is so bad, so confoundingly bad, so jaw-droppingly bad, so transcendentally bad, that you really have to see it.

Martin Scorsese on this film:

After I had a chance to see mother!, I was even more disturbed by this rush to judgment, and that's why I wanted to share my thoughts. People seemed to be out for blood, simply because the film couldn't be easily defined or interpreted or reduced to a two-word description. Is it a horror movie, or a dark comedy, or a biblical allegory, or a cautionary fable about moral and environmental devastation? Maybe a little of all of the above, but certainly not just any one of those neat categories.

Is it a picture that has to be explained? What about the experience of watching mother!? It was so tactile, so beautifully staged and acted — the subjective camera and the POV reverse angles, always in motion … the sound design, which comes at the viewer from around corners and leads you deeper and deeper into the nightmare … the unfolding of the story, which very gradually becomes more and more upsetting as the film goes forward. The horror, the dark comedy, the biblical elements, the cautionary fable — they're all there, but they're elements in the total experience, which engulfs the characters and the viewers along with them. Only a true, passionate filmmaker could have made this picture, which I'm still experiencing weeks after I saw it.
