Although I'm not sure, I may have enjoyed this book even more than any of the novels within the Drake Chronicles series. I love books following the concepts of death and ghosts, and usually they make it cliche or cheesy but I liked the way that Harvey touched upon cliches without going overboard. Violet was realistic while also being obviously fictional and it's what made the book amazing. I usually don't enjoy stories set outside of modern time, such as the 19th century in this case, but I'd gladly make an exception for any other books by Harvey if they meet this level of work. - @PageTurner of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Haunting Violet is a paranormal, murder mystery novel written by Alyxandra Harvey; the story takes place in the late 1800’s. Violet and her mother are in the business of the paranormal. Violet’s mother pretends to be a medium. She drugs her clients then gives them fake messages from their loved ones, so she can make a living for herself and hopeful one day get married to a rich earl. Years pass by and they get invited to entertain guests at Lord Jasper’s estate. But things take a turn for the worst; Violet’s mother is discovered to be a fake medium during one of her sessions. It also turns out that Violet gets the powers of an actual medium and now she has to try and solve the murder of Rowena Wentworth. As she gets deeper into the mystery, people start to get suspicious. Her life is now at risk and the spirit of Rowena won’t leave her alone until she is at rest. Haunting Violet is the perfect title for this book. Violet doesn’t want her powers because she doesn’t like the attention. But now Rowena is haunting Violet, so she can find her murderer. I would rate this book a four out of five stars. This book is different from any other book that I have read. It takes place in the 1800’s which gives us a different perspective of what life was like back then, than what it is now. Also this is a murder mystery that has the help of the murder victim instead of just going off of clues that were left at the crime scene. You will want to read this book again.

This book was absolutely amazing! "Haunting Violet" , by Alyxandra Harvey is such an eerie, addicting story, that is sure to keep you turning pages. Set in the 1800's, Haunting Violet follows 16 year old Violet, who is forever burdened by her mother's lies and tricks to convince to public that she can see spirits. All Violet wants is to get away from her mother's trickery. But how can she do that when she realizes that she herself can actually see ghosts and spirits...for real. With the help of the ghosts, Violet sets out to solving a creepy murder mystery, and uncovers lies that have been buried long in the past. I will admit that the first few chapters of the book are quite boring; they progress very slowly and mostly tell of Violet's past. A lot of the book feels very repetitive and mediocre at the beginning. However, once the suspense starts drawing in, it's almost impossible to stop reading. Suddenly, all of the repetitiveness makes sense and it leaves you wanting more with every page. The characters in the novel are teenagers themselves, and are faced with real life issues, such as relationships and parental pressures. These elements add something for the reader to relate to. The style of the book is great as well. Even though the book is set in an older time period, the style is still current and easy for teenagers, as well as any other reader to understand and get engaged to. I’d recommend this book to anyone above the age of 13, who'd like a good mystery/supernatural read, to keep them thinking all night.

An interesting book but there are too many details in the beginning of the book that made it a bore at first.

The premise is so promising and the tagline on the cover of the book (Violet doesn't believe in ghosts...but they believe in her.) is so intriguing. But the actual story doesn't deliver on the promise. The writing is mediocre and amateurish. Don't waste your time on this one.

Violet Willoughby doesn't believe in ghosts, especially since her mother has worked as a fraudulent medium for a decade. Violet has taken part in enough of her mother's tricks to feel more than a little jaded about anyhting supernatural. The ghosts, however, believe in Violet and she's been seeing them everywhere. One ghost in particular needs Violet to use her emerging gift to solve her murder ...and prevent the ghost's twin sister from suffering the same fate.
