After seeing all the awards given the author I was expecting a pretty good read. I was somewhat disappointed. The story flowed well but the fact that she had all the money in the world (3 houses?) and every time she needed information or assistance, her staff quickly came up with tons of information orcwhatever she needed. It made the story pretty unrealistic.

The characters are also a bit two dimensional, I could not really get into the story other than curiosity as to how it would be resolved. The main character appeared to be just another privileged, self-important woman who floats through the story with her large staff and other contacts/friends who are always there to assist her. Money is no object so that also added to the ridiculousness. Truly a fantasy life for her and her husband.

I am glad I read this book (to see what this author writes) but will definitely not look for another.

For those people looking for a good mystery series, it's hard to beat the Richard Jury novels by Martha Grimes ( and award winner who truly deserves it). Start with 'the man with a load of mischief'.
Another good series is the Bill slider books by Cynthia Harrod Eagles, which begins with the novel 'Orchestrated Death'.

I hadn't read a McCone novel for awhile, so it was nice to see the familiar characters. It was an ok story. Some of the conventions used to tie the substories together were somewhat farfetched. These detectives are not superhuman after all! But...entertaining enough for a bedtime, no brainer read.

“The Night Searchers” by Marcia Muller is an okay-ish detective novel. While the novel attempts to raise the stakes and tensions as the story progresses, it just doesn’t feel like the danger rises all that much. Sure at one point she is betrayed and has to go into hiding, but she easily figures out ways to continue her tasks while remaining hidden without difficulty. The plot of the novel is not all that interesting either. Yes, it does involve a secret group that is connected to the mystery that the main character (Sharon) is trying to solve, but their activities don’t grab my interest that much and the story ends pretty weak. It does involve action and a somewhat tense standoff, but its not very creative. So while the book is not so dull that I will fall asleep or lose all of my interest, I’m not exactly too eager to re-read it. 3.5/5 Stars - @Odyssey of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

This is a good read although I found the ending a bit disappointing.
