Samuel Cooke knows most women wouldnt give him a second glance even if he were the last man on earth. Hes the cripple with crutches, the nerdy computer genius every female past puberty feels compelled to mother. So when he leaves his lucrative career to teach programming to high schoolers, romance definitely isnt on his radar. Perhaps thats why Greta Cassamajor catches him off guard. The sarcastic gym coach with zero sense of humor is no beautynot even on the inside. But an inexplicably kind act toward Samuel makes him realize she is interesting. Samuel is certain she wont accept his invitation to dinnerso when she does, hes out of his depth. All he knows is that hell do whatever it takes to keep her as long as he can. Pretending hes got his class under control? Easy. Being vulnerable enough to admit why he ditched his programming career for teaching? Um, numbers That would require honesty. And if theres one thing Samuel cant exist without, its the lies he tells himself. In this poignant, witty debut, Ramsey Hootman upends traditional romance tropes to weave a charming tale of perseverance, trust, and slightly conditional love.

This is the story of two misfits, each as different from the other as seems possible. What makes it so unique is the slow reveal of who each of these people really are beneath the surface. I kept finding out little things about why each of them did, behaved, or said the things they did that explained all those things that made others perceive them as such an odd pair. Why would a guy with extraordinary computer skills, leg braces, confidence issues, and little interest in sports leave his cushy job to teach in a high school? And what is it about the older, athletic, and tiny bit scary women's basketball coach that he finds so attractive? Here's a hint. When Samuel Cooke asks Greta what she sees in him, the tall, broad-shouldered, salt and peppery, sweats-wearing basketball player responds, quite simply "You make me feel pink." This novel is the exploration of how to people seemingly having nothing in common find everything in each other. Bring a hankie.

Life is awkward. Love is awkward. Not just for teenagers but adults too. I loved this book! The characters are very endearing even though they are not the typical main characters in a romance. Highly recommended!
