Thought it was a good movie. Not the best John Wayne movie, but not that bad either.

I've seen the Horse Soldiers a number of times over the years and always liked it but this last time I started to have some doubt(s) about it actually being a good movie. The worst doubt was the scene where Major Kendall ( William Holde) throws a cup of coffee into the face of Colonel Marlowe (John Wayne) and the two agree to a fist-fight out-of-sight of the troops. Majors don't behave this way towards Colonels. Thet get court-martialed for disrespect like this. Doubt number two follow very closely. William Holden not only decks John Wayne but seems to be holding his own in a fight. Not on Holden's best day and Wayne's worst day could this happen. Actress Constance Towers provides the beauty in this picture but she does nothing special for anyone. Imagine a Southern landowner being taken hostage by a Union brigade only to find she is falling in love with the leader of the brigade. "Surely not in this lifetime would that happen, Suh." Then we have the scene where Wayne's character is shot in the leg and must endure the doctor's probing without any anesthesia of any kind. Almost immediately after removing the bullet Wayne is mounting a horse and doing all the stuff he did before being shot. Later, I see Wayne walking with hardly a limp. This guy is tough!
